New York CNN —Disney is curbing password sharing for its Disney+ streaming service as part of a larger effort to boost signups and revenue. CEO Bob Iger, in a CNBC interview on Thursday, said its popular Disney+ streaming service will start cracking down on password sharing in June in some countries and more broadly in September. Although Disney+ and Disney’s other streaming services’ terms of service explicitly prevent customers from impersonating someone else by using their username or password, it hasn’t been broadly enforcing its policy. The crackdown comes as its rival Netflix has attributed a jump in signups from its recent crackdown on password sharing. The password crackdown had been expected for months.

Disney’s board triumphed by what the company called “a substantial margin” over the nominees put forward by Trian Fund Management and Blackwells Capital at its annual shareholder meeting. CNN —Disney is banning password sharing on its streaming services, following in the footsteps of competitor Netflix. Hulu’s user agreement, along with the agreements for Disney+ and ESPN+, explicitly prevent users from impersonating someone else by using their username or password. All three user agreements were last updated on January 25, though it is unclear when the password-sharing language was added to the agreements for Disney+ and ESPN+. The user agreements say that the company may analyze users’ accounts to ensure they comply with password-sharing rules. The move was hinted at by Disney CEO Bob Iger in August, who said the company planned to address the issue of password sharing in 2024.

The investment comes at a time the company is facing revenue challenges in its streaming services, movie and television assets — almost everywhere but its international theme parks. New York CNN —The Writers Guild of America and Hollywood studios have agreed to meet on Friday to resume negotiations for the first time since the writers went on strike in a landmark labor action that has crippled the entertainment industry for more than 100 days. “We expect the AMPTP to provide responses to WGA proposals,” the WGA wrote in a statement to its members. The strike will push back fall television premieres and late night television shows haven’t aired new episodes since May. The longest writers’ strike on record stretched for 154 days in 1988. In an August 4 statement, the WGA claimed AMPTP leaked parts of their confidential meeting to the press.

“The advertising marketplace for streaming is picking up,” Iger told investors on the quarterly earnings call. The announcement puts to an end much of the initial allure that led to the popularity of streaming. That served as the genesis of the streaming era, with legacy entertainment companies such as Disney racing to launch their own direct-to-consumer products at unsustainably low costs. Couple that reality with the introduction of ads into streaming and the end product eerily resembles on-demand cable. It’s an ironic end to the streaming wars.

But Disney appears to be all-in on the boss, even though the sequel almost never lives up to the original.
